A Winston-Salem man, Matthew Morris, has been sentenced to 10–13 years in prison after pleading guilty in connection to a 2021 fatal shooting. The charges include voluntary manslaughter, discharging a firearm into an occupied property, two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, and attaining habitual felon status.
The incident occurred on May 29, 2021, when police found 32-year-old Shaun Goolsby shot in the head inside a home on West Academy Street. Investigators determined Morris fired multiple shots into the house from a neighboring driveway after being alerted by resident Asia Steed. He was arrested the next day at a local motel, where police found a firearm and cocaine in his vehicle.
