WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man was shot and killed by police Friday evening after allegedly shooting and injuring an officer during a confrontation in southeast Winston-Salem.

Around 6:05 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance involving weapons at 1037 Nancy Lane. There, they encountered 34-year-old Antonio Irene Betancourt, who had active warrants for carrying a concealed weapon, marijuana possession, and drug paraphernalia.

When officers attempted to arrest him, Betancourt resisted and opened fire, striking one officer in their bulletproof vest. The second officer returned fire, fatally wounding Betancourt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

Winston-Salem Police Chief William H. Penn Jr. praised the bravery of his officers and said the incident underscores the risks they face daily. The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to review the shooting, which is standard protocol. The names of the officers involved have not yet been released.
