WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A 41-year-old man is facing a series of criminal charges after police say he broke into a home in Winston-Salem early Monday morning while accompanied by two children.

Around 4:49 a.m., officers with the Winston-Salem Police Department responded to a reported burglary in the 4000 block of Rolling Knoll Lane. Investigators determined that Taalib Din Khalil Grier had unlawfully entered the residence with two minors. While inside, Grier and the children used the homeowner’s belongings, and Grier was reportedly armed with a firearm.

The homeowner, who was asleep during the break-in, woke up and confronted the situation. Grier then fled the scene with the children. No injuries were reported, and authorities confirmed that Grier and the homeowner did not know each other.

Following an investigation, Grier was taken into custody and charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree trespassing, two counts of child endangerment, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of marijuana, malicious injury to property, auto breaking, larceny, and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Police also served him with outstanding warrants from a separate incident, including assault on a government official and resisting a public officer.

The case remains under active investigation.
