A 54-year-old man was fatally shot on Aug. 8 following a confrontation on Zuider Zee Drive, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.

Officers responded to a reported shooting and found Hayes Godfrey Miller lying on the ground with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

Investigators say the incident arose from an ongoing dispute between Miller and another resident of the neighborhood. According to police, Miller approached the individual’s home in a threatening manner while armed with a firearm. The resident then shot Miller.

After consulting with Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill, police determined the shooting appeared to be an act of self-defense. No charges have been filed at this time, though the investigation remains active.
