A 49-year-old repeat offender, Bryon Shane Martin, has been sentenced to 15 to 23 years in prison for the rape and robbery of a 77-year-old woman inside her Winston-Salem store in September 2023. The attack came less than a month after Martin was released from prison, sparking renewed concern over early release policies for violent offenders.

A Brutal September 2023 Attack

The assault happened at a small store on Reynolda Road, near Hanes Park. Police say Martin threatened the victim with a hammer and forced her to have intercourse before robbing her. He fled the scene on foot.

Thanks to quick police work, a K9 tracking unit, and eyewitness accounts, Martin was arrested within two hours on Canal Street. Both the victim and witnesses identified him on the spot.

A Long Criminal History

Martin’s criminal record spans over three decades, with multiple convictions for assault, kidnapping, breaking and entering, and larceny. He had been released from Piedmont Correctional Institution just weeks before the attack.

Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill said the victim wished to avoid the trauma of testifying, and Martin’s guilty plea to first-degree kidnapping and second-degree forcible rape spared her from court.

Sentencing and Public Reaction

Superior Court Judge John Morris handed down the 15–23 year sentence, stressing that crimes against elderly victims deserve severe punishment. O’Neill added that Martin will likely face consequences from fellow inmates for his violent actions.

O’Neill also praised the Winston-Salem Police Department and community members for their swift cooperation, which helped bring Martin into custody so quickly.
